MAYA MODELLING TUTORIAL

When modelling using Maya there are a few steps to be thoughtful of. They are the size of your object in Maya units and the rotation of the model on export.

This tutorial is not an in depth modelling tutorial with Maya, we are presuming you know how to do that already. There are plenty of tutorials on the internet on how to use Maya. These steps will make sure that your model appears correctly in Gogofrog.

Please Note:

For some reason, setting the units in Maya to centimeters does not match the same measurements in Gogofrog. For that reason, you should still set your Maya scene units to centimeters, remembering that a standard avatar in Gogofrog is 90 cm tall. So model with this proportion in mind. Before exporting, remember to scale your object by .5 on all axes (X,Y,Z). This will make sure your model appears correctly in Gogofrog.

STEP 1 - Create a new Maya scene

- Go to the file menu
- Click 'New Scene'

This will start a new Maya scene to export.

STEP 2 - Model or Import your object

- You may have a mesh from another program to import or are quite comfortable in modeling your own 3d mesh. In this example I have created a simple box. It is important to make sure that the origin of the scene is at the base of your object on the Y axis and the middle of your object on the X,Z plane.

- You should also make sure that the origin of your object is at the base of the object on the Y axis and centered in the space your object occupies on the X,Z plane.

Once you are satisfied with your model, assign it some texture coordinates and create a texture for your model. Please make sure you read the section called 'Creating textures for Gogofrog Models'.

STEP 3 - Export your object

You are now ready to export your object, this is a relatively simple process, but before you do, you will need to rotate your model so that it appears correctly in the Gogofrog world.

- Select everything in the scene that you want to export.

- Scales on all axis by .5

- Go to the menu Normals > Reverse

- Now rotate your model +90 degrees on the X axis.

That's it!

Before being able to export as OBJ, go to the Maya Plug-in Manager. You can do this by going to the menu Window > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager. Make sure that the OBJ export plug-in is set to run and load when you start Maya.

- Now all you need to do is to export the file.

- Go to the menu File > Export Selection > OBJ Export

- Enter the name of your file and where you want to save it.

Make sure you have a texture for the object and you are finished. Leap into Gogofrog and start uploading!!
